Golwg ar y Gweithiwr / Maker Spotlight: Therese Urbanska

image

‘Astudiaeth Yr Eifl o draeth Morfa‘

Dwy-ieithog – Bi-lingual

Arlunydd o Ogledd Cymru ydy Therese Urbanska ac y mae ei gwaith yn dala swyn a harddwch y tirlun lleol, o ymylon mwyn y môr glas i'r bythynod hyfryd a'r capeli sy'n britho'r arfordir. Y mae'r goleuni ysgafn, ond dramatig ar brydiau, yn hollbwysig i greu y naws unigryw sydd yn ei  gwaith. I gael y cyd-chwarae rhwng cysgodion a golau, defnyddia haenau acrylic, papur a lliwiau meddal i greu gwead bywiog, diddorol. Bydd ei Dosbarth Meistr Tirluniau Gaeafol (Hydref 24ain) yn canolbwyntio ar bethau mwy cartrefol, lle gellwch adeiladu darlun o ddeunyddiau cymysg o'ch cartref (neu unrhyw le sydd wrth eich bodd) trwy  ddefnyddio technegau clytwaith neu collage, ac y mae hi wedi addo dangos ychydig mwy o driciau sydd ganddi wrth weithio ( yn ddifyr iawn, rhai yn cynnwys sychwyr gwalltiau a brwshus dannedd !).

Therese Urbanska is a North Wales artist whose work both explores and captures the beauty and charm of local landscapes, from sweeps of soft blue sea to the charming cottages and chapels which dot the coastline. Diffused but often dramatic light is crucial to creating the unique atmosphere present in the paintings. The interplay between shadows and light is achieved through layering acrylics, paper and pastels  to creates movement and interesting textures. Therese’s upcoming ‘Wintery Landscape’ Masterclass (24 October) concentrates on the more domestic subject of home, where a mixed media painting of your home (or another place you adore) will be built up using collageing techniques, painting and she’s promised to show a few other tricks of her impressive trade (intriguingly involving hairdryers and toothbrushes!).

Gofynnais ychydig o gwestiynau i Therese / I asked Therese a few questions:

C. Y  mae'r lliwiau glas a gwyrdd yn  ddelfrydol ar gyfer eich tirluniau. Ydych chi'n paentio tir luniau oherwydd eich bod yn cael eich ysbrydoli gan y lliwiau yma, ynte ydych chi'n defnyddio arlliwiau yma oherwydd eu bod yn dala'r harddwch gwyllt mor dda ? Pa un ddaeth gyntaf ?

Rydw i wedi cael fy nenu gan y tirwedd erioed, yn enwedig yr arfordir. Yn blentyn ifanc, treuliais lawer o amser yn cerdded clogwyni Porth Meudwy gyda fy rhieni yn gwylio adar a threulio llawer i haf (ac yn dal i wneud ) ar y traeth a'r mor. Mae lliwiau glas a gwyrdd y peunod yn fy swyno ac mae hyn efallai oherwydd imi fyw ger yr arfordir ar hyd  fy mywyd, a thrwy hynny i'r lliwiau glas a gwyrdd dreiddio rywsut i fy is-ymwybod.

Q: Your work thrives on a strong pallette of blues and greens ideally suited to your landscapes. Do you paint landscapes because you are inspired by these colours or do you think you’re drawn to use these hues because they capture the wild beauty so well? ie which came first?

I have always been drawn to the landscape, and especially the coast. As a young child I spent a lot of time walking around the cliffs at Porth Meudwy with my parents as they birdwatched and spent many, many summers (still do!) on the beach and in the sea. I am fascinated by peacock blues and greens, and I think this may be due to having lived near the coast all of my life and so the bluey green colours of the sea and sky have subconsciously been planted in my mind.

C. Beth fydd y pethau allweddol fedr bobl ddysgu yn eich dobarthiadau meistr - Y Tirlun Gaeafol ?

Rydw i'n gobeithio y bydd bobl yn dysgu llawer o dechnegau newydd nad ydynt wedi trio o'r blaen . Y mae tirluniau gaeafol yn ffordd wych i ddysgu sut i ddefnyddio acrylic mewn gwahanol ffyrdd, weithiau mewn ffyrdd mor annisgwyl â defnyddio brwsh dannedd. Coeliwch neu beidio mae brwsh dannedd yn gallu gwneud ‘seren ac eira’ gwych wrth ei ddefnyddio mewn ffordd arbennig.

Q: What, in your opinion are the key things people can learn on your ‘Wintery Landscape’ Masterclass?

I’m hoping that people will learn lots of different techniques that they may not have tried before. The winter landscape paintings are a great way to learn how to use Acrylic paint in various ways - some of which might be a little unexpected like using a toothbrush!  Believe it or not a toothbrush is a very effective 'star and snow’ creating tool when used in a certain way with Acrylic paint.

image

C. Pa brosiect neu safle paentio fuasai eich dymuniad pennaf ?

Mae gen i ddwy ffordd o weithio. Un ydy'r dull y byddwn yn ei wneud yn y gweithdy, dyma fy mhleser drwg !! Rydw i wrth fy modd yn creu golygfeydd bychan sy'n adrod stori, bwthyn, ychydig o anifeiliaid a gallaf ddiflannu i fy myd bach fy hun a chael boddhad enfawr (ac ymlaciol). Ar y llaw arall mae gen i ffordd wahanol o weithio, rhyw steil eitha rhydd sy'n dod o le gwahanol iawn yn fy nghalon( dyna'r unig ffordd y gallaf ei ddisgrifio ), ac yn aml iawn does gen i ddim syniad be ydw i'n wneud, ond yn gwybod mod i'n chwilio am rhywbeth.  Mae gen i ddelwedd yn fy meddwl, synnwyr o le,   cof am olygfa, ac yn aml iawn daw'r syniad yn baentiad, (ond ddim bob tro). Dydy paentio yn y ffordd yma DDIM yn ymlaciol, a dweud y gwir gall fod yn hollol groes ! Felly mae fy mhroject ddelfrydol yn newid  trwy'r amser, yn dibynnu ar sut ydw i'n teimlo a beth sydd wedi fy ysbrydoli ar y pryd, a  gall ysbrydoliaeth ddod o'r llefydd mwya annisgwyl  !

Q: What is your dream project or place to paint?

I have two ways of working. One is in the style that we will be covering at the workshops, this is my guilty pleasure! I absolutely adore making little scenes that tell a story, a cottage, some animals, I can disappear into my own little world and it gives me a huge amount of satisfaction (and relaxation!) On the other hand I have another way of working which is very different, it is usually a  very lose style and comes from a very different place in my heart (that’s the only way I can think to describe it!) quite often I have no idea what I am doing, all I know is I am searching for something. I may have an image in my mind, a sense of a place, a remembered vision and occasionally the painting becomes  that idea (but more often it doesn’t!) When I paint in this way it is NOT relaxing, in fact in can be quite the opposite! So I suppose my ideal project, painting subject changes all the time, it depends on the way I feel and what has inspired me at that time - inspiration can come from very odd places!

Caernarfon, Pwllheli,...New York*? (*o bosibl/possibly!)

Siop iard Pwllheli, 13 Stryd Moch/ Gaol St, Pwllheli

Dwy-ieithog – Bi-lingual

Y mae teulu Siop  Iard wedi ehangu yn ddiweddar, gyda Siop Iard Pwllheli,13 Stryd y Moch yn ymuno â changen Caernarfon, 7 Stryd y Plas. Ynghyd â thîm gwreiddiol y Siop sef Ann Catrin Evans, Angela Evans a Dave Stephen, ym mis Gorffennaf ymunodd  Lora Wyn, Elin Mair Roberts (Janglerins), a Charlotte Bellis yn hapus iawn i'r cwmni ym Mhwllheli  Er mwyn dod i'w hadnabod yn well dyma ddarlun byr o'r siopau, oherwydd y mae i bob un ei steil unigryw ei hunan. Gyda'r waliau gwyn a chypyrddau niferus yn llawn trysorau diddorol, yn y siop ym Mhwllheli cawn argraff o le cyfoes bywiog. Y mae llawr hir y siop yn cyfleu agosatrwydd sy'n eich temtio i bori'n hamddenol yno, tra mae'r gweithdai bychain yn y cefn yn eich atgoffa bod y darnau a werthir yn y siop wedi eu gwneud â llaw gan y crefftwyr.

The Siop iard family has recently expanded, with the Caernarfon branch (7B Stryd y Plas) being joined in July by Siop iard Pwllheli (13 Stryd Moch /13 Gaol St). Along with the original Siop iard team of Ann Catrin Evans, Angela Evans & Dave Stephen, the new Pwllheli branch happily now includes jewellers Lora Wyn, Elin Mair Roberts (Janglerins) and Charlotte Bellis. To know them better, let me provide a brief little snapshot of the shops, as each wears it’s own distinctive style. The Pwllheli branch oozes a fresh chicness from it’s white washed walls dotted with wall cabinets, each displaying tempting treasures.  The long, low shop area creates a sophisticated, intimate atmosphere for comfortable browsing, while the little workshop at the back is a compact reminder that each piece on sale is entirely handmade by the artists.

image

Siop iard, 7B Stryd y Plas, Caernarfon

Y mae Siop Gaernarfon yn fwy o ran maint gyda chelfi hynod ddiddorol o gwmpas ac weithiau torchau o fflamau yn dyst i'r holl weithgarwch ! Dewch yma os am weld merched yn defnydio morthwylion yn rhyfeddol effeithiol neu i weld Dave yn cyfnewid o weithio â llechi i ganu a'i gitar (y mae Dave, gyda llaw yn gerddor ardderchog a chawn ninnau fwynhau cerddoriaeth fyw tra'n gweithio, wrth iddo ymarfer ei ganeuon newydd).

The Caernarfon branch opts for a more rustic swagger with a far larger workshop area stacked with intriguing tools and frequently, with flaming torches and signs of curious industry. If you want to see ladies being alarmingly efficient with hammers or Dave swapping between slate and musical interludes (an excellent musician, he often practises new tunes out on us, it all feels very continential to have live music while we work).

Dyna fy argraff i o'r siopau. Ac ynghlyn â'r gwaith holl bwysig sydd ar werth, dyma ychydig o esiamplau ohonynt i roi blas ichi.

That’s my impression of the shops, as for the all important work on sale, here are a few signiture items from each designer/maker to give you a flavour:

Golwg ar y Gweithiwr / Maker Spotlight: Luned Rhys Parri

Dwy-ieithog – Bi-lingual

Rwy’n edrych ymlaen yn arw i un o’n gweithdai nesaf gan yr hyfryd Luned Rhys Parri. Yn ffres yn ol o Batagonia a’i anturiaethau cyffroes yno i greu gwaith i’w arddangosfa diweddar mae Luned wedi cyntuno i wneud gweithdy ‘Te Prynhawn’ i ni Dydd Sadwrn Medi 26. Byddwch yn creu cwpan a soser dlws allan o wifren , papur , cardfwrdd a charpiau o ffabrig yn arddull unigryw Luned. Er mwyn i chi ddod i'w hadnabod yn well, gofynnais ychydig o gwestiynau iddi:

I have been really looking forward to one of our next workshop with the lovely Luned Rhys Parri who fresh from her travels in Patagonia to create work for her most recent exhibition has agreed to do an ‘Afternoon Tea’ workshop for us on Saturday September 26 so you can create your own pretty cup and saucer using wire, cardboard, paper and scraps of fabric in Luned’s quirky style. For you to get to know Luned a bit better here’s a few questions I posed to her:

C: Pa ymatebion cofiadwy sydd wedi bod i’ch gwaith?
Mae fy ngwaith yn boblogaidd gyda phobl o bob rhan o Gymru, ond rwyf yn ymwybodol hefyd bod fy nghreadigaethau wedi’u prynu gan edmygwyr o rannau eraill o’r DU ac Ewrop, a phrynwyd tri darn yn ddiweddar gan bobl o Batagonia.
Mae pobl yn uniaethu â’r hiwmor sydd yn fy ngwaith ac â’r mannau a ddarlunir yn y cefndir.
Yn ddiweddar cefais arddangosfa lwyddiannus yn  Galeri, Caernarfon gyda golygfeydd o Ddyffryn Nantlle yn gefndir i nifer o’r lluniau.  Gwerthwyd y rhan fwyaf o’r lluniau i bobl leol.

Q: What memorable responses have you had to your work?
My work has attracted people from all over Wales, but I am also aware that a number of my creations have been bought by admirers in other parts of the United Kingdom and Europe, and three were recently bought by Patagonians.
People relate to the humour in my work and some of the background locations to the created figures.
I had a recent successful exhibition at Galeri, Caernarfon depicting scenes in the Nantlle Valley.  Most of the work was sold to local people.

C: Ar ol creu’r gwaith diweddar wedi ysbrydoli gan eich trip i Batagonia, beth neu lle fyddai eich prosiect delfrydol nesaf?
Ym mis Tachwedd 2014 ariannwyd fy nhaith i Batagaonia gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Rhyngwladol Cymru ac Oriel Glyn y Weddw.  Cefais gyfle yno i weithio mewn ysgolion, ac fe’m gwahoddwyd i nifer o dai, a hyn a ysbrydolodd fy arddangosfa ddiweddaraf ym Mhlas Glyn y Weddw, Llanbedrog.
Yn y gorffennol rwyf wedi gweithio yn Llydaw ac ar ynysoedd Gogledd a De Uist yn yr Alban.  Hoffwn ddychwelyd i’r mannau hyn er mwyn creu gwaith sy’n adlewyrchu eu diwylliant arbennig hwy.

Q: After the work inspired by your recent Patagonia trip, what or where would be your next dream project?
In November 2014 Welsh International Arts Council and Oriel Glyn y Weddw funded my visit to Patagonia.  There I had the opportunity to work in Welsh-Patagonian schools and was invited to a number of homes which provided inspiration for my recent exhibition at Plas Glyn y Weddw, Llanbedrog.
I have worked in Brittany and on the Hebridean islands of North and South Uist in the past, and would very much hope to return to these two places and concentrate on creating work illustrating their particular culture.

C: Beth yn eich barn chi yw’r brif pethau gall rhywyn ddysgu ar eich cwrs?
Mae pobl sy’n dod ar fy nghyrsiau yn cael y cyfle i greu darn diddorol, llawn cymeriad a hwyliog allan o ddeunyddiau cyffredin a hygyrch.  O gael canllawiau ar sut i greu darn syml fel cwpan a soser dylai’r cyfranogwyr ddatblygu’r sgiliau a’r arbenigedd i fwrw ati i greu darn mwy uchelgeisiol gyda gwifren a phapur.

Q: What, in your opinion ar the key things people can learn on your course?
People who attend my workshops or courses are given the opportunity to create an exciting, characterful, fun piece out of simple and easily sourced materials.  Given the guidance to create a simple piece such as a cup and saucer, the participants should gain the skills and expertise to tackle a more complicated and intricate paper and wire relief.

Mae cwrs Luned ar Medi 26, £54 am y sesiwn yn cynwwys defnyddiau. Ffoniwch 01286 672472 i archebu lle.

Luneds course is on Septmeber 26, £54 for the session including materials. Phone 01286 672472 to book.

Golwg ar y Gweithiwr / Maker Spotlight: Charlotte Bellis

image

Dwy-ieithog – Bi-lingual

Yr hyfryd Charlotte Bellis ydy'r un sydd ddigon dewr i fod y cyntaf yn ein tymor newydd o gyrsiau crefft, mae'n grochenydd ac aelod o dîm Siop iard (wedi ei lleoli yn y siop newydd ym Mhwllheli). Bydd yn cynnal dau weithdy ‘Placiau Porslen’ ar Ddydd Sadwrn Medi 12 fed ac ar  Fedi 19eg. Os ydych yn awyddus i gyfarfod Charlotte ymlaen llaw (a mwynhau ychydig o fusnesa o gwmpas ei gweithdy diddorol!) bydd ei lle ar agor yn ystod yr Helfa Gelf Medi 4/5/6.  (gweler gwefan yr Helfa Gelf am fwy o wybodaeth ).Er mwyn i chi ddod i'w hadnabod yn well, gofynnais ychydig o gwestiynau iddi:

Bravely being first up in our new season of craft courses will be the lovely Charlotte Bellis, a ceramist and member of the Siop iard team (based in the new Pwllheli shop). She’ll be running a two part ‘Porcelain Plaques’ workshop on Saturday 12th + 19th September. See our website for more details. If you’re keen to meet Charlotte in person beforehand (and you enjoy a nosey around an interesting workshop, the messier the better I find), then during the Helfa Gelf Art Trail her workshop will be open 4/5/6 September (see Helfa Gelf website for more info). For you to get to know Charlotte a bit better, here’s a few questions I posed to her:

C.  Beth sy'n ysbrydoli eich gwaith ?
Y mae fy ngwaith yn cael ei ysbrydoli gan y byd naturiol a'i ffurfiau organig, wedi ei ddylanwadu gan dirwedd anhygoel Gogledd Cymru ac hefyd gan fy nheithiau i'r Dwyrain Pell ac Ewrop. Rydw i'n gweithio mewn lliwiau, siapiau a gwead sy'n atgoffa un o'r môr, planhigion ac elfennau o'r ddaear.

Q: What inspires your work?

My work is inspired by the natural world and organic forms and has been influenced both by the stunning scenery of North Wales and my travels in the Far East and Europe. I work in colours, shapes and textures evocative of the sea, plants and elements of the earth.

C. Beth sydd fwyaf cynhyrfus wrth weithio mewn serameg ?
Rydw i'n gweithio fwyaf mewn serameg oherwydd rydw i'n caru ei burdeb ar ffordd y mae'n fy ngalluogi i greu siapiau cain ac ysgafn. Rydw i'n defnyddio llawer o blanhigion yn fy ngwaith. Trwy eu gwasgu i'r clai, mae'r porslen yn dal manylion bychain hardd, ac felly caiff y printiadau manwl eu cynnwys yng ngwead fy ngwaith . Rydw i hefyd yn hoffi arbrofi gyda gwydro a chreu lliwiau newydd. Mae'n ddiddorol sylwi sut mae'r gwydro yn adweithio, fel y mae bob amser ychydig yn wahanol wrth ddod allan o'r odyn

Q: What do you find most exciting about working in ceramics?

I mainly work with porcelain as I love it’s purity and the way it allows me to create beautiful organic shapes that are light and delicate. I use a lot of plants in my work. By pressing them into the clay, the porcelain captures the fine and beautiful details so I can get the most intricate prints and texture in my work. I also love experimenting with glazes and creating new colours. It’s always interesting the way glazes react and are always a little different when they come out of the kiln.

C. Pa brosiect fuasai'n freuddwyd gennych ?

Buaswn wrth fy modd yn derbyn comisiwn i lunio cerflun enfawr i hongian mewn adeilad hardd. Fuasai ddim gwahaniaeth petai'n adeilad hen neu newydd, ond ei fod wedi ei addurno'n drawiadol, a'i oleuo'n fendigedig. Buaswn wrth fy modd petai'n ganolbwynt yr ystafell, felly'n creu effaith syfrdanol wrth gerdded i mewn i'r lle

Q: What is your dream project?

I would love to be commissioned for a really large hanging sculpture for a beautiful building. I wouldn’t mind if it was an old or new building but something quite grand that had stunning decor and lit up beautifully. I would love for it to be a centre piece and create a real impact as you walked into the space.

C. Beth ydy'r cyngor gorau ichi ei dderbyn erioed ?

Rydw i wedi cael llawer o gynghorion buddiol erioed sydd wedi bod o gymorth mawr i fy musnes. Rydw i'n dal i ddysgu ac yn parhau i werthfawrogi cyngor, ac wedi dysgu llawer oddi wrth grefftwyr a bobl eraill. Rydw i'n credu ei bod yn bwysig parhau i wneud yr hyn rydw i'n garu wneud, gweithio'n galed ac i safon uchel.  Mae bob amser yn bwysig cael targedau, hyd yn oed rhai anodd eu cyrraedd. Alla i ddim gweld fy hun yn gwneud dim arall.

Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

I’ve had a lot of great advice along the way that has really helped me with all areas of my business. I am always learning and still appreciate advice now, I have learnt a lot from other people and fellow crafters. I think for me it’s always important to continue to do what I love doing, to work hard and to a high standard. Goals are always good to have and to keep going even when it’s difficult, I can’t really imagine myself doing anything else.

C. Lle ydi eich hoff le, neu'r lle sy'n rhoi fwyaf o ysbrydoliaeth ichi ?

Fedra i ddim nodi un lle arbennig, mae cymaint o lefydd wedi rhoi ysbrydoliaeth i fi. Rydw i wrth fy modd yn teithio a darganfod diwylliannau newydd. Ar ol bod yn teithio y cefais fy ysgogi i gychwyn fy musnes a dychwelyd i Ogledd Cymru, roedd gen i gymaint o syniadau newydd i fy ngwaith. Rydw i wrth fy modd yn byw yng Ngogledd Cymru, a medru mynd allan o'r ty ac i fyny'r mynyddoedd gyda fy nghi, hyd yn oed pan mae'r tywydd yn ddrwg. Mae mor ddramatig, rydw i'n hoffi'r ffordd y mae'r tirlun yn newid trwy'r adeg. Teimlaf yn lwcus iawn i gael byw mewn ardal mor hardd, gyda'r arfordir a'r golygfeydd anhygoel i fy ysbrydoli trwy'r adeg.

Q: Where is your favourite or most inspirational place?

I don’t think I could say just one place, there are so many places that inspire me. I love travelling and exploring new cultures. It was after travelling that I was motivated to start my business and return to North Wales, I had so many ideas for my work. I love living in North Wales, being able to walk out of my door and go up the mountains with my dog, even when the weathers bad is great. It’s so dramatic and I love the way the landscape is always changing. I feel lucky to live in such a beautiful area to have all this stunning scenery and coastline, I am inspired all the time.

C. Pam y dylai bobl ddod i'ch cwrs ?

Credaf bod fy nghyrsiau yn gyfle gwych i weithio gyda porslen a gwydro, a chael arbrofi a chanfod. Gobeithio y byddai bobl yn cael hwyl wrth gymdeithasu, a chael cyfle arbennig i fynd â rhywbeth personol adre efo nhw. Mae'n berffaith os hoffech brofi rhywbeth newydd a chreadigol. Mae bobl yn dweud wrtha i o hyd y bydden nhw wrth eu boddau yn gweithio efo clai ond bod anhawster cael defnydd o odyn a gwydro. Buasai fy nghyrsiau yn rhoi cyfle i chi greu eich darnau eich hun, ac oherwydd mod i'n defnyddio fy odyn fy hun i'r 'bisque’ a'r taniad olaf, byddai gennych ddarn gorffenedig o ansawdd uchel ar y diwedd.

Q: Why should people come on your course?

I think my courses are a great opportunity to work with porcelain and glazes and to experiment and explore. I hope people find them fun and sociable and it’s a great chance to make something personal that you can take home with you, it’s perfect if you want to have a go at something new and creative. I always have people saying to me they would love to have a go working with clay but it’s difficult as you need access to a kiln and glazes. My courses give you the opportunity to create your own piece and I use my kiln for the bisque and final firing so you end up with a high quality finished piece.

Mae cwrs Charlotte ar Medi 12 a 19, 10-1yh, £65 am y ddwy sesiwn. Ffoniwch 01286 672472 i archebu lle.

Charlottes course is on Septmeber 12 and 19, 10-1pm, £65 for the two sessions. Phone 01286 672472 to book.
